Henryk Sienkiewicz wrote this remarkable short story during his travels in the United States. It was first published in 1881.

It is the moving story of a Polish man who arrives in Aspinwall, Panama, and takes a job as a lighthouse keeper, hoping to find peace and stability after years of wandering.

The story was inspired by a real Polish man named Siellawa, who lost his lighthouse keeper's job after neglecting his duties while absorbed in Zygmunt Kaczkowski's “Murdelio”.
